East Portal to Winter Park

Over a dozen Petunias rode mountain bikes from the East Portal to Winter Park in July. Starting west of Rollinsville near the Moffat Tunnel, the crew climbed 14 miles of an old railroad grade to the summit of Corona Pass. While the Jeep road was rough at times, happy chatter and constant pedaling took minds off the grind. Having to hike-a-bike over the closed Needle Tunnel challenged upper body muscles – we’re cyclists after all! – but landed us at a high alpine field of delicate, tiny wildflowers and a welcomed chilly breeze. From there it was over wooden trestles that only those without a fear of heights could peer down. Then, the descent! Miles of gravel took pressure off the quad squad’s legs. Choosing singletrack over road, a couple Petunias cut off at Broken Thumb (currently rough due to motos) and the balance of riders veered onto Upper Yankee Doodle (in splendid shape!). Multiple races were held in the area over the weekend, including USA Cycling’s Mountain Bike Nationals and Outside Event’s Crooked Gravel. We found ourselves pulling over time and again to let Outside’s Sunrise to Sunset 12 hour racers ride by on Crosscut. Not wishing to dampen their spirit or ruin their time, we exited on Rendezvous neighborhood roads toward our final destination: an apres happy hour at our luxe Inspirato vacation home!

happy chatter and constant pedaling…
